On October 30, 2013, Pullman & Comley, LLC’s Labor, Employment Law and Employee Benefits Department presented its annual seminar on labor, employment, employee benefits and immigration law issues at The Hartford Club in Hartford, Connecticut.
Highlights of the seminar included Attorney Andrew Glassman’s highly-informative discussion on the impact of legalized medical marijuana on Connecticut employers.
Additionally, Attorneys Sharon Freilich and George Kasper discussed what employers need to know with the implementation of the Affordable Care Act.
Attorney Mark Sommaruga led a discussion on the Connecticut Supreme Court decision in State v. AFSCME Council 4, Local 391 in which the Supreme Court overturned an arbitrator’s award involving an employee dismissed for sexual harassment. Attorney Sommaruga’s talk was timely in light of this week’s Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals decision overturning an arbitrator’s decision relating to a noncompetition covenant award, due to the arbitrator manifestly DeWan decision. This informative, substance-filled seminar was very well received by the dozens of attendees.
Other discussions included: an update on the U.S. Supreme Court decisions in Vance v. Ball State University and University of Southwestern Texas Medical Center v. Nassar; guidance on employee screening; dealing with social media in the workplace; and updates on immigration laws. Our keynote speaker was Deputy Labor Commissioner Dennis Murphy who discussed the DOL’s initiatives including its mission to recoup fraudulently-received unemployment compensation benefits.
